Tall table lamp. One part light and one part sculpture, the table lamp is an important design factor in any room. Table lamps can affect the entire tone of an area, from smart and cheery to dimly-lit and incomprehensible. Lighting can transform the entire atmosphere of an area. Following are a few tips to take into account whenever choosing a table lamp for your home or office.

Identify the existing style of the area and determine your style objectives. Take into account that there is no one “right” table lamp – it is actually a matter of what style or feelings you want to express – but some alternatives are certainly better than others.

Light Needs

Identify the function of the lamp in terms of light needs. Is the lamp’s goal to provide basic area (also called ambient), reading, or accent lighting?

If there are other light resources in the area, a 60 watt light might provide enough light for a living room. However, if only using a couple of lamps to light an entire room, it can be best to choose 100 to 150 watt bulb or a 3-way light. This also offers sufficient light for reading. A reading lamp should offer 150 or even more watts. In general, rooms must have a source of light every 10 feet or so.

Typically, brief or narrow lighting fixtures are appropriate on smaller dining tables and bulkier and taller bulbs are better best suited on larger dining tables or floors. A lamp located on a buffet stand and other small surface should typically become more slim or shorter. Over a petite nesting table or a thin console, a tall and slim candlestick light may be the best option.</p
