Red table lamp. One part light and one part sculpture, the table lamp can be an important design aspect in any room. Table lamps can affect the complete tone of an area, from shiny and cheery to dimly-lit and inexplicable. Lighting can change the entire atmosphere of a room. Pursuing are a few tips to take into account when choosing a table lamp for your office or home.


Identify the existing style of the area and determine your look objectives. Take into account that there is no one “right” table lamp – it is very a matter of what style or feeling you want to express – but some alternatives are certainly much better than others.

Light Needs

Identify the function of the lamp in terms of light needs. Is the lamp’s purpose to provide basic area (also called ambient), reading, or accent lamps?


If there are other light options in the room, a 60 watt light bulb may provide enough light for a living room. However, only if using one or two lamps to light up an entire room, it could be best to choose 100 to 150 watt light bulb or a 3-way light. This also gives sufficient light for reading. A reading light should offer 150 or more watts. In general, rooms must have a light source every 10 feet or so.


Typically, brief or narrow lamps are more appropriate on smaller desks and bulkier and taller bulbs are better matched on larger dining tables or floors. A lamp located on a buffet desk and other small surface should typically become more slim or shorter. On the petite nesting stand or a slim console, a high and slim candlestick lamp fixture may be the best choice.</p
