If there are other light sources in the room, a 60 watt light bulb may provide enough light for a living room. However, if only using one or two lamps to light up an entire room, it could be best to invest in a 100 to 150 watt light bulb or a 3-way bulb. This also offers sufficient light for reading. A reading light should offer 150 or more watts. In general, rooms should have a source of light every 10 feet or so.

Typically, brief or narrow bulbs are more appropriate on smaller desks and bulkier and taller lamps are better matched on larger desks or floors. A lamp situated on a buffet table and other small surface should typically become more thin or shorter. Over a petite nesting table or a small console, a tall and small candlestick lamp fixture may be the best choice.</p
